Installing Joomla from Ubuntu Command Line

I am moving the contents of my scratch shared hosting web server to an AWS Ubuntu 12.x Linux t1.micro instance, and transferring has gone well, except for an old Joomla 1.6.6 installation. I've decided to just migrate the site contents. I tried installing Joomla at the command line by using WGET to obtain the Joomla 2.5.8 zip file and then unzipping it. That part worked beautifully and QUICKLY!

Now I'm trying to run the installation. After selecting the default UK English and clicking next in the Joomla install, the AJAX wheel is spinning and the installation doesn't go any further. I am installing in a subdirectory of /opt/bitnami/apache2/htdocs, and my other Joomla and Wordpress sites have come up just fine after copying files over and importing their MySQL databases (with a few tweaks, of course).

I have sufficient space and the PHP settings are generous, but this installation is just sitting here doing nothing. Why can't I do a fresh install of Joomla on my instance?
